Master Your Story with Cinematic Mode on iPhone

Master Your Story with Cinematic Mode on iPhone

Capturing video that looks like a professional film used to require expensive gear and a dedicated crew. With Cinematic Mode on your iPhone, you can achieve that same high-quality look simply by pressing record.

What is Cinematic Mode?

Cinematic Mode applies a depth-of-field effect that keeps the subject of your video sharp while beautifully blurring the background. It mimics the techniques used by film directors by automatically shifting focus when a new subject enters the frame or when your main subject looks away. This allows you to tell more engaging stories without needing to adjust complex camera settings manually.

How to Record in Cinematic Mode

Getting started is as simple as taking a standard video. Follow these steps to begin filming:

Step 1: Open the Camera app on your iPhone.

Step 2: Swipe the menu above the shutter button until you select Cinematic.

Step 3: Tap the Arrow in landscape mode to reveal adjustment options. You can tap the f-button (Depth Control) to adjust the blur intensity or the Exposure button to brighten or darken your shot.

Step 4: Tap the Record button to start filming.

Step 5: Your iPhone will automatically find and track subjects. To lock focus on a specific person or object, simply tap it on the screen. Double-tap to set automatic AF tracking on that subject.

Editing Focus After You Shoot

One of the most powerful aspects of Cinematic Mode is that the focus isn't permanent once the recording ends. You can change where the focus lands and adjust the background blur directly in the Photos app.

  • Change Focus: While editing, tap a different subject in the video timeline to shift the focus to them.
  • Adjust Depth: Use the slider to increase or decrease the "f-stop" value, which changes how much background blur is applied throughout the clip.

Pro Tip: Cinematic Mode is particularly effective for interviews or product showcases. By blurring a busy background, you remove distractions and ensure your audience remains focused exactly where you want them.
